February

February's here!  We're that much closer to spring, friends - and I got to flip the page on our most marvelous 2015 calendar, handcrafted by the mastermind (and our dear friend) Lin at Rhody Art.

How awesome is it?  Yes, it's that awesome.  Kay and I have to take turns turning the pages.

Time for a few fun facts about February - ready?

It's the most frequently misspelled month, because of that pesky "r" that doesn't get pronounced.  We say FEB-you-airy, not FEB-rue-airy.

It's the only month mentioned by name in the works of William Shakespeare.

"Why, what's the matter,
That you have such a February face,
So full of frost, of storm and cloudiness?"

-- Don Pedro to Benedick in "Much Ado About Nothing," ca. 1598

It's the shortest month in the year with its 28 days, but every four years it has 29 days instead of 28, and that's what's called a leap year.  The next leap year is next year, 2016.

I've always remembered when leap years occur because they happen to coincide with US presidential elections.

Groundhog Day is February 2, based on an old Pennsylvania German folk belief that if it's cloudy in early February when groundhogs begin to venture out of their winter burrows and they can't see their shadows, spring will come early, but if it's sunny in early February, and the groundhogs spot their shadows, spring will come 6 weeks late.

I don't know - six weeks seems pretty darn specific to me.  But groundhogs are so cute!  Way cuter than your average meteorologist and probably a bit more accurate as well.

February's birthstone is amethyst, glorious purple amethyst - and we'll be back with much more on amethysts very, very soon.  The amethysts you see below are just a few of the gorgeous purple gemstones we have listed right now.
